ELA Growth

This display shows the aggregate Student Growth Percentile (SGP) for this school or district. SGP is a norm-referenced measure that indicates the rate of growth in English Language Arts (ELA) compared to Illinois students who had similar scores in the previous year or the two previous years, if available. Values range from 1 to 99, where 50 represents typical growth or reflects the absence of directly comparable data from the previous year.  Learn More

Student Growth Percentile (SGP) is a norm-referenced measure, showing how students' growth compares to Illinois peers who started the previous year — or the two previous years if available — with similar scores. It does not measure how much a student's score increased, but rather the speed of growth compared to peers.

SGP uses the current year's score and scores from the previous year or two previous years, if available, to calculate a growth trend.

  • Individual student SGPs range from 1 to 99, and these are averaged to produce the school or district mean SGP (MSGP).
  • A score of 50 represents growth at the state average — or reflects the absence of comparable prior-year data.
  • Higher scores indicate faster growth compared to peers; lower scores show slower growth.
  • Cohort SGP compares a student's growth this year to other Illinois students in the same grade and subject who had the same score last year. The state average is always 50 in a cohort SGP calculation.
  • Baseline SGP compares a student's growth this year to students with the same score in a specified baseline year. A state mean above 50 in a baseline SGP calculation means students grew more this year than in the prior baseline year.
